We all love a healthy glow, but the phrase ‘fake tan’ often conjures thoughts of streaky arms, oompa-loompa legs and a weird smell that follows you round for days! A great, non-toxic fake tan is hard to find but exposing skin to harmful UV rays isn’t a solution either. That’s what makes Eco Tan New Zealand’s best option for a healthy tan.

Eco Tan is from the sunny, sandy shores of Australia’s Gold Coast. Even so, with winter on it’s way, we’re thrilled to stock it here in New Zealand too. It’s important to get out and about in the sunlight and soak up Vitamin D, but our harsh Kiwi sun can burn and damage the skin even on a cloudy day, and yes, even in winter. It’s what makes natural sun protection and safe tanning products like the Eco Tan range so incredibly valuable.

So what’s Eco Tan all about?

We’re enjoying Eco Tan this winter thanks to the drive and passion of one Gold Coast Mum. Sonya Driver is the creator of Eco Tan, a business venture that started when her sister was diagnosed with melanoma. Understandably, the news flipped Sonya’s life on its head. After volunteering in East Timor, she returned determined to make a positive contribution to her sister’s life and the world.

It’s a solution for people wanting a healthy, bronze glow without skin damaging UVA rays or harmful chemicals. Sonya and her sister spray tanned together but, after growing concerned about commercial tanning ingredients, did some of her own research. Once she read about the synthetics and toxins in conventional fake tan products, Sonya said it only took her “a few minutes to decide not to use [those] products anymore.”

Sonya bought her samples of natural cocoa, flower essence, chamomile and oils, and the rest is beautiful bronze history.

Sonya describes it as a company “founded on authenticity and transparency”, certification being absolutely vital. In 2011 they became the first tanning manufacturer ever to be Certified Organic under Organic Food Chain. Eco Tan is also Toxin Free according to Safe Cosmetics Australia, with endorsements from Choose Cruelty Free too.

We also love the fact that their entire tanning and body care range is vegan, and they even have a fantastic vegetarian sunscreen. All in all, it’s an incredible conscious tan with the accreditation to prove it – exciting, no?

The Eco Tan 3-step process:

A flawless, low-maintenance tan is just a few small steps away! With Eco Tan’s 3-step process we can all say goodbye to orange stained bed sheets and iffy chemicals.

 1. Create the perfect tanning canvas

It’s a step a lot of people forego for quicker results, but proper exfoliation is absolutely essential for a professional-looking tan. The Eco Tan Exfoliant Glove is a great way to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores before you bronze. As well as creating a smooth surface, the glove also helps reduce acne, blackheads, millia and even cellulite.

If exfoliating scrubs are more your style, Eco Tan Himalayan Salt Scrub will do the trick. The salt component sloughs off dead skin while Macadamia Seed Oil and Coconut Oil hydrate. Pink Grapefruit and Lemongrass essential oils assist with lymphatic drainage while you scrub, too.

2. Choose your weapon of choice

One of the best things about Eco Tan is how many different options you have when it comes to actually tanning and building colour. Eco Tan Face Tan Water is a nice and easy way achieve a natural facial glow, and it works a little like a cleanser. It’s non-comedogenic so it won’t clog pores, and it also helps fight visible signs of ageing and acne.

Those after a gradually building all-over tan will love Eco Tan Winter Skin. This tinted moisturiser builds an even tan over 3-4 days as it hydrates, working with your natural complexion for a lovely honey-toned shade.

Eco Tan Invisible Tan is a richer self-tan that melts into the skin completely unseen. This means you can apply before bed and let it work its magic overnight with no sheet staining or mess whatsoever! It also contains a yummy mix of Aloe Vera, Avocado Oil and Rose Geranium Oil to nourish and condition.

The fastest working product of the bunch though is Eco Tan Cacao Firming Mousse. This produces a deep, bronze tan in just one hour and also helps firm and reduce the appearance of cellulite. It contains all the skin-smoothing benefits of Organic Coffee, Blood Orange, Ginger and Mandarin.

3. Keep your skin happy and healthy between applications

The key to maintaining a great tan isn’t just frequent application, but also proper skin care in between. Eco Tan Body Milk keeps the skin silky and moisturised and is suitable for even the most sensitive skin. It smells brilliant and is a great way to make sure your tan lasts by keeping your skin conditioned.

Eco Tan’s vegetarian Coconut Sunscreen also helps to protect the skin from the elements. It’s non-greasy and doesn’t form that annoying, white film that so many commercial sunscreens do. Effective UV protection made from natural, safe ingredients? Yes please!
