Makeup brushes are an essential part of your beauty kit. If you wear makeup then you need the right tools for the job.
The right brushes will mean the difference between looking like the supermodel version of yourself and the post apocalyptic zombie you.
I've written all about brushes in this Good Magazine article. You’ll find all you need to know to give you the best results without spending a fortune gathering a tonne of fancy and unnecessary products. Find out the difference between synthetic and animal hair and the top five and possibly only brushes you'll need.
You’ll also be able to make more conscious decisions and avoid wasting money and the planets resources unnecessarily.
Since cleaning your brushes is crucial, often overlooked or just plain ignored, I’m posting this recipe here as well. Regular cleaning will prolong the life of your brushes for years if not decades, and more critically, help avoid contamination and infection.
DIY brush cleaner
1 cup of water, bottled or distilled
1/3 cup isopropyl alcohol
1/2 tbsp dishwashing liquid
1/2 tbsp gentle shampoo
1/2 tbsp leave-in conditioner
Mix ingredients together in a glass jar, and transfer to a small spray bottle. Spray onto your brush without over-wetting and gently wipe the product off onto a tissue. Voilà! You’re good to go again. Even if you use a brush cleaner, it’s still important to shampoo your brushes every few uses.
