Homemade Body Butter

by Emma Peters September 06, 2014

This homemade body butter recipe is the answer to my skin’s prayers.

I love using a body moisturiser after a shower, but being the label reader that I am, it can be quite frustrating to find a pure chemical-free moisturiser or body butter. Even the “natural” brands out there contain things like phenoxyethanol, which is sometimes necessary as a safer than paraben preservative. Now I’m sure it’s fine in small doses in certain products but when you’re applying a product to a large surface- like your entire body- day in and day out, it’s just better to avoid it all together.

The other ingredient that appears a lot in body butters is Hydrogenated oils (this is the process of turning a normally liquid-at-room-temperature oil into a solid, think margarine) . I try my darndest to stay away from trans fats in my diet, so I’m not all that keen to absorb them into my skin either!

Any way, that’s my rant done and thankfully there’s no need to worry. Here is a gorgeous recipe that I’ve adapted from two of my favorite health and food sites Holisticsquid.com and Rawmazing.com

What you’ll need:

1/2 Cup Cacao Butter

1/2 Cup Shea Butter

1/2 Cup Coconut Oil

1/2 Cup Jojoba Oil (or another liquid oil such as Almond or mild Olive oil)

15-30 Drops of Essential oil (my favorite oils are doTerra because they’re Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade)

  1. Melt the Cacao Butter, Shea Butter and Coconut Oil in a double boiler
  2. Stir in the Jojoba or other liquid oil
  3. add your essential oil or blend ( doTerra’s Whisper  is gorgeous and contains some of my favorites  rose, jasmine, bergamot, cinnamon, cistus, vetiver, ylang ylang, cocoa, vanilla, sandalwood, and patchouli.)
  4. Next let your mixture cool a bit before transferring it to the fridge for a few hours. You want it to start to solidify but not harden.
  5. Use a hand mixer to whip it to soft fluffy peaks
  6. Transfer to a jar which can be kept at room temperature for a few months providing it’s not too hot.
  7. Slather on every day to keep your skin smooth and silky.

The scent (and therapeutic benefit) combinations are endless. I’d love to hear what your favorite essential oil combos are.
