If this is your first time reading one of my articles or visiting belle & sage, natural beauty boutique, welcome. And if you’ve been here before, nice to have you back again.
I must admit, I don’t get a lot of time to write articles (due to raising my two little girls and working full time as a makeup artist and overseeing the running of belle & sage- phew!), so if you are familiar with us, it’s still probably been a while since you’ve seen something new from me!
I wanted to write an article explaining what belle & sage is all about and give you an idea of why I started this store and the blog.
Having been a makeup artist for the best part of 20 years, working in all areas from fashion to film to TV to advertising, I’m still really passionate about what I do. I love seeing the transformation that can be achieved with makeup, and that difference can be subtle or totally outrageous.
The problem is (or was) that my other passion is health and nutrition which has lead me to casually studying nutrition for about 10 years and becoming a trained yoga instructor as well.
I’m a label reader- food, cosmetics, sunscreen you name it, if there’s an ingredients list, I’m all over it (my husband stopped going to the supermarket with me years ago!) I want to know what the ingredients are and what they do for/to the human body. So, omg, confusing stuff. It’s a rabbit hole alright!
Anyway, cut to the chase, I started to doubt the health of the standard makeup and cosmetics I was using. After all, the skin is an extremely absorbent organ and it horrified me that there were so many nasty and potentially toxic chemicals in the beauty products we use on a daily basis. And the layering effect, that’s a frightening thought too, that an “approved” amount of a certain chemical in one product, may be slowly building up in your system if that same ingredient was in two, three or more of the products you use every day.
I won’t go into the specific effects of each chemical here, but if you’d like to read more on toxic cosmetic ingredients that’s a whole other article.
So, not only did the stuff I was using contain so many questionable ingredients, it was also very hard to find any natural alternatives, well ones that actually worked to achieve the results that I was looking for anyway.
Jump cut to now, and I’m pleased to say that have an amazing collection of natural and organic beauty products available at belle & sage, all of which meet my “ingredients approval” and that I’ve tried myself and continue to use on my clients. I have pretty high standards, so will only stock products that I agree with both performance wise and ingredients wise. And I’m aways on the hunt for great additions to the store.
So if you haven’t yet had a chance to look around, please do, I’m always available though the contact form for feedback, advice or if you just want to say hi!
